The question of Western Sahara
The dispute around Western Sahara has remained unresolved since 1975, when Morocco included the region in its composition after the end of the Spanish colonial rule. Algeria supports the Front Polisario, achieving the independence of the region.
Morocco insists on its jurisdiction over the region, while the front of Polisario declares its independence. Before the ceasefire agreement in 1991, achieved through the mediation of the UN, Polisario waged an armed struggle against the Moroccan forces. Negotiations on the status of Western Sahara after a truce have not yet led to significant results.
