Two of the three Bulgarians fears that Russia will strike missile and bombing on objects in Bulgaria, while more than half fears that Russia can occupy them. This is stated in a national representative sociological survey conducted by Estat on behalf of the Foundation “Workshop of Civil Initiatives”, Euraactiv reports.
According to the survey, three of the four Bulgarians are afraid of the use of nuclear weapons, while 54% say that they are afraid of the possible occupation of Russia, and 62% fear rocket and bomb shocks in various objects.
This can explain why the country does not support a strict policy against Moscow and why Bulgarian society seeks to take a neutral position in relation to the war in Ukraine.
Moreover, only 10% say that they know the history of Bulgarian -Russian relations, and 80% are not confident in their knowledge, which creates favorable ground for Russian propaganda and distortion of historical facts.
The survey also indicates that 50.3% await that NATO will help if Bulgaria is attacked, but only 41% support the membership of Bulgaria in the Alliance, and 33% against.
61% of the Bulgarians do not know that Russia opposed the unification of the Bulgarian territories in 1885, and 42% of people are sure that the USSR did not declare war on Bulgaria. The country was occupied by the Red Army from 1944 to 1947, after which Bulgaria was under the communist dictatorship over the next 45 years.
