Today (15 May 2022), NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană set out the priorities of a two-day Informal Meeting of Foreign Ministers in Berlin. “We will address the latest developments in Ukraine, and our response,” he said. “President Putin’s war in Ukraine has profoundly changed European security; and NATO has responded with speed and unity to support Ukraine, and to keep our people safe at this dangerous time” he said.
“Last night, we were joined by the Finnish and Swedish Foreign Ministers; they updated us on their national debates and their possible application for NATO membership,” the Deputy Secretary General also said. “Allies made clear that each country has the right to choose its own path, ” he added. He stressed that Finland and Sweden are NATO’s closest partners. Mr Geoana said, “I am confident that, if these countries decide to seek membership, we will be able to welcome them to find all conditions for consensus to be met.”
