The Foreign Minister of the NATO countries will gather in Prague to discuss the topical topics for the alliance, and mainly the support of Ukraine.
The informal meeting in the Czech capital will be held in preparation for the NATO summit, which will be held in Washington on July 9-11 of the current year.
Turkey at a two -day meeting will be represented by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
The ministers will exchange ideas on the issues of deterrence and defense standing on the agenda of the Alliance, as well as discuss in detail the support of Ukraine.
Particular attention at the meeting will be paid to air defense and supply of artillery ammunition. In addition, in order to ensure sustainable support provided by Ukraine, ways of institutionalization and fair distribution of burden within the alliance will be considered.
It is expected that the issue of air defense will be discussed both in the framework of the support of Ukraine and in the context of the “general airspace in Europe” proposed by Greece and Poland.
A regular representative of the United States under NATO Julianne Smith said that the Alliance is considering the possibility of appointing a civil representative in Ukraine.
As part of this context, NATO is working on a roadmap, which provides for the idea of creating Warfare Center to obtain information about the course of the Ukrainian-Russian war and attentive observation of the development of events “on the ground.”
New Secretary General NATO
Another important item of the agenda will be the question of who will replace the current Secretary General of Jens Stoltenberg, whose powers expire on October 1. To date, two candidates are represented: Romania President Klaus Johannis and Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte. At the same time, most allies are inclined towards the candidate from the Netherlands. However, since the consensus has not yet been reached on this issue, negotiations between the allies are expected to continue.
The decision on the new Secretary General is planned to be made before the summit in Washington to announce it at the event.
