NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg opened a two-day meeting of Foreign Ministers on Wednesday (6 April 2022), saying he expected Allies to address the brutal war in Ukraine.

Doorstep statement by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg ahead of the meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs

“We have seen no indication that President Putin has changed his ambition to control the whole of Ukraine and also to rewrite the international order, so we need to be prepared for the long haul,” he said. He added: “We need to support Ukraine, sustain our sanctions, and strengthen our defences and our deterrence”.

NATO Foreign Ministers are also expected to discuss the development of NATO’s next Strategic Concept, a roadmap for the Alliance’s continued adaptation in a more dangerous world. Foreign Ministers from Ukraine, Finland, Sweden, and Georgia will take part in the meeting, as well as the EU High Representative. NATO’s Asia-Pacific partners – Australia, Japan, New Zealand and the Republic of Korea – will also participate.
