Natural attraction of Turkmenistan: traces of dinosaurs

In the Koitentag Mountains in the east of Turkmenistan, there is one of the most amazing natural attractions – a dinosaur plateau.

Tourists show great interest in this place, where there are about 3 thousand petrified traces with dimensions from 20 to 90 cm.

The main researcher of the Institute of History and Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, Kakadzhan Bayramov, in an interview with Anadolu, said that Turkmenistan is rich in ancient and historical values. “There are also dinosaurs on the territory of Turkmenistan,” he said.

According to the scientist, in the mountains of Koitentag there are thousands of prints of paws of various sizes.

“Traces of the mountain, probably belonged to dinosaurs who went on two hind legs. Judging by their traces, these could be dinosaurs similar to the Iguanodons who lived 100 million years ago. To study the traces of dinosaurs, they need to conduct a scientific research”, – Bayramov believes.

He noted that the region with traces of dinosaurs is an important tourist center of Turkmenistan.

“Turkmenistan has very rich values and heritage. Places with historical values and historical ruins in the country are very important from the point of view of tourism,” the researcher added.

Traces of dinosaurs in the region were known to local residents for centuries. But they fell into science of paleontology after discoveries made by geologists and historians in the second half of the 20th century.

The dinosaur plateau in the Koitentag is listed as a real “miracle of paleontology”, about 400 meters long and 300 meters wide, with the largest number of traces of dinosaurs in the world,
