President Niger Mohamed Bazum asked about the support of the United States and the international community.
“At an hour of need, I call the US government and the entire international community help us restore our constitutional order. (…) Niger people will never forget your support at this turning point in our history,” Bazum wrote in his article published The Washington Post.

According to him, in the “troubled” region, Sahel Niger is “the last stronghold of compliance with human rights.”
“Although this attempt to a coup is a tragedy for the Nigers, its success can be destructive consequences far beyond our borders,” the head of state emphasized.
Bazum noted that the coup underestimated “has no excuse”.
“Our government came to power as a result of democratic elections in 2021. It is necessary to counteract any attempt to overthrow the legal government, and we appreciate the decisive and unambiguous condemnation of this cynical attempt to destroy the significant progress achieved by Niger under democracy,” he wrote.
The rebellion in Niger began on July 26, when the Presidential Guard blocked the President Bazum and the family in his residence. Initially, the president’s office distributed a message that neither the army nor the National Guard supported the conspirators. However, after a few hours, reports appeared that he was displaced.
General Omar Tchiana, who led the coup in Niger, declared himself the president of the transition period.
He made a statement about this on the air of national television.
