The number of people who died as a result of the landslide in the Ges-Gof area in the south of Ethiopia increased to 146 people. The landslide was caused by heavy rains that covered mountain massifs.
The representative of the local authorities Dagmavi Ilele said that among the dead there are small children and pregnant women.
at least five people managed to extract alive from mud masses, he noted. “During the search and rescue operations, we saw children who lost all family members, including mother, father, brothers and sisters,” Ilele said.
Another representative of the GEZE-GOFA authorities Misikir Mitika told state television that among the dead there may be members of the search and rescue brigades.
The head of the Communications Department Gofa Kasahun Abayne also confirmed that during the search and rescue works of many rescuers it was covered with a mud stream.
