The research vessel “Oruç Reis”, developed by Turkey using domestic and national means, completed preparations for the mission in Somalia.
The latest tests of the ORUS REIS research vessel have been conducted in the port of the philosopher, which will take part in the work as part of the Memorandum of Understanding the Somali Treasury and Marine Blots, signed in March between the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Turkish Republic and the Ministry of Oil. and mineral resources of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
The ship will collect seismic data on 3 licensing plots in Somalia, the area of each of which is about 5 thousand square kilometers. In this regard, it is assumed that the work will last about 7 months.
ORUS REIS research vessel will be accompanied by the auxiliary vessel Zağanos Paşa, Sancar Sancar Support and ATAMAN tracking ship, as well as two frigates of the command of the naval forces.
The collected data will be processed and evaluated at the TPAO data processing directolation in Ankara. In the case of positive results, the drilling stage will begin. After completion of the work, it is planned to return the vessel to Turkey.
The ship, which will go from the port of the philosopher during the day to Istanbul, will take a course on Somalia on Saturday.
Technical characteristics of the vessel
The Oruç Reis research vessel, specially designed for geophysical, geological, oceanographic and hydrographic studies, designed by Turkish engineers and built in Turkey, has a length of 87 meters, a width of 23 meters and a height of 34 meters.
ORUS Reis is a universal ship and is used for exploration of natural resources, the study of the continental shelf and the earth’s crust, the study of natural disasters (earthquake, tsunami, climate change, etc.), as well as to study the sciences of land in order to determine structural elements in marine and oceanic areas.
On the Oruç Reis vessel, exclusively Turkish citizens work as a team, and Turkish staff are also busy in most departments of seismic exploration and research.
The ORUS REIS research vessel, which began its work in 2017, collected data by conducting seismic studies of 2D and 3D on a total area of 23 thousand square kilometers in the Mediterranean and the Marble region under the leadership of the General Directorate for the Study and Environmental Intelligence (MTA), as well as in the Mediterranean and Black Seas (especially at the Sakarya gas field) under the auspices of the Turkish oil corporation (TPAO).
