Paris Limits Right To Citizenship Of France Born On Mayott

Paris tightens the conditions for obtaining citizenship for children born on the island of Mayott, the overseas territory of France, located in the Indian Ocean north of Madagascar

On the eve of April 8, at the plenary meeting of the National Assembly of the Lower Chamber of the French Parliament, a bill was discussed aimed at tightening the conditions for receiving French citizenship for children who will be born on Mayutt.

The bill proposed by the Party “Republicans” (LR) was adopted by a majority of votes- 339 “FOR” and 174 “Again.”

according to the new position, so that the child born on Mayott could claim French citizenship, his parents must live on the island of at least one year.

Earlier, to obtain citizenship, it was enough for one of the parents to live on Mayott for at least three months.

This bill was already approved on April 3 by the Senate of the Upper House of Parliament. After approval by the National Assembly, it is considered finally accepted by parliament.
