Parliament Of South Korea Adopted Bill Providing For “immediate” Detention Of President

The National Assembly (Parliament) of South Korea adopted a draft resolution, which includes the “immediate” detention of President Yong Sok Yolya in connection with the declaration of martial law on December 3.

According to the Yonhap news agency, the National Assembly was voting under a bill proving the detention of 8 people involved in the announcement of martial law. The draft resolution was adopted by 191 in a vote against 94. Of the 288 deputies who took part in the vote, 3 abstained. Among the persons, within the framework of initiatives about the “immediate detention” of 8 people, including President South Korea Yol, ex-minister of defense Kim Yong Hyun and ex-Minister of the Interior Lee San Min.

Since the National Assembly could not accept the proposal to remove the Yun Sok Yol from the post of Jun, because it was not possible to ensure the majority of the vote, the opposition this time introduced on the agenda a bill on detention.

Earlier, the National Assembly adopted a bill providing for the appointment of a specially authorized prosecutor to investigate the President of South Korea due to the declaration of martial law.

On December 7, the National Assembly of South Korea did not adopt a proposal for the impeachment of President Yun Jole Yolya due to the lack of a sufficient number of votes.

In order to make a decision on the impeachment of the president, it was necessary to gain 200 votes of deputies, which is 2/3 of the total number of members of the parliament. The opposition bloc with 192 out of 300 seats in the National Assembly, to ensure the majority, needed to support at least 8 deputies from the ruling party “Civil Power”

Introduction of martial law in South Korea

President Yun Sok Yol announced martial law on December 3, referring to the participation of the opposition in “anti -state activities”.

After that, the Ministry of Defense sent instructions on the meetings to the military commanders and called for being in a state of increased readiness. Military personnel who were instructed to ensure the implementation of martial law entered the building of the National Assembly.

At an emergency meeting of the Parliament, the proposal to cancel martial law was supported by 190 deputies. Representatives of the administration of the National Assembly said that after the vote, martial law became “invalid”.

After voting in parliament, the president changed his decision, gathered a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers and officially announced the abolition of martial law after receiving the approval of the cabinet.

Later, the President of South Korea was banned from traveling outside the country due to the investigation in the case of “Gosizmen”.
