Antarctica (AA) – Participants in the 9th National Antarctic Scientific Expedition reached the island of dysmal on the third day of their sea trip and completed maintenance work at the station of the global satellite navigation system (GNSS).
A scientific expedition is carried out under the auspices of the administration of the President of Turkey, with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Technology in coordination with the Institute of Polar Research Tübi̇tak Mam.
The expedition participants began their journey from the King-Jorde Island, went through the Le-Maer, Penol and Grandye Straits, after which they arrived on the island of Dismal, located on the southern oceanic side of the island of Adeleid.
The team held maintenance and studied the position of the first outside Turkey of the GNSS station, installed 5 years ago on the island of Dismal, located 40 naval miles from the island of Khorsha, where the research camp of Turkey is located.
Researchers completed their work on the island and transferred the data collected during the year.
The head of the 9th National Antarctic Scientific Expedition, Professor Hasan Hakan Yavashoglu, said that the team arrived at the island of Dismal on the third day of the trip, which started from the island of King-Jorde, overcoming about 1200 km.
“The GNSS station, created in 2020, continues to collect the data. Being the Southern South Station on the Peninsula, it provides us with very valuable data. The station, whose operating time was increased thanks to the updates carried out, reports to us about the deformations caused by the change both tectonic and isostatic pressure in this region. geodetic network, ”said the scientist.
One of the team members, the General Lieutenant Abdullah Kelelevezir, the main lieutenant of the Main Directorate of Cartography (HGM), said that the agency takes part in scientific expeditions organized in Antarctica since 2020.
“As part of the events that we held during this expedition, satellite observations are carried out using the stationary GNSS station located on the island of Dismal,” he said.
According to Kelelevezir, the GNSS observations are carried out at 6 ground geodetic points on two islands.
“We track and evaluate the tectonic movements of the region, analyzing the data collected during these observations using scientific software,” he said.
