The population of Japan will decrease by a third over the next 50 years, dropping to a mark of 87 million people.
The corresponding forecast published the National Institute of the Population and Research in the field of social security under the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan.
So, by 2070, the population of the Pacific state will be less than 30 percent less than in 2020.
According to an updated forecast, the total population of Japan, which was 126.1 million people in 2020, will fall below the mark of 100 million people already in 2056.
The share of foreigners, including students and workers living in the country for more than 3 months, will increase from 2.2 percent to 10.8 percent from 2020 to 2070.
According to the forecast, the birth rate indicator, which decreased below 800 thousand in 2022, will fall below 700 thousand by 2043 and by 2070 – lower than 500 thousand per year.
The population of Japan aged 15 to 64 years, which is believed to support the social support system of Japan, in 2020 amounted to 75 million people. According to the institute, by 2070 this segment will be reduced to 45.3 million people.
