Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev proposed creating a special mechanism in the UN system for missing persons as a result of armed conflicts.
This was said by the head of state in appeal to the participants of the International Conference on the topic “Building of national and international efforts aimed at clarifying the destinies of persons missing”.
The president noted that the issue of people who missed during armed conflicts is a global problem and Azerbaijan took serious steps to increase attention to this issue in the international plane.
“Our country every two years puts forward a resolution on missing persons at the UN General Assembly. We believe that there is a need to create a special mechanism associated with missing persons in the UN system,” Aliyev emphasized.
According to the president, this issue is one of the most serious problems that Azerbaijan has encountered.
“During the First Karabakh war, 3890 of our citizens were missing as a result of the occupation of Armenia of the territories of Azerbaijan. There is irrefutable information that 872 people from the total number of people who were missing were captured or hostages were taken in the territories in the territories who were once under the occupation. According to reliable data, the missing persons were subjected to Armenia torture, killed and buried in mass burials in the previously occupied territories of Azerbaijan, ”he said.
The head of state noted that as a result of excavations carried out on the territories liberated from the occupation over the past two years, 10 mass burials were discovered.
Pliev called on the international public to put pressure on Armenia in order to provide it with the Azerbaijani side of information about the fate of the missing persons and mass burials. “This is a purely humanitarian issue and its politicization is unacceptable,” the president said.
