President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, agreed to introduce a draft law “On the suspension of the agreement on ordinary armed forces in Europe” (DOVS) to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the draft Law. BelTA reported this in the press service of the Belarusian leader.
This agreement was ratified by Belarus and entered into force in 1992. The document provides for restriction of the total levels of conventional weapons and equipment in five main categories (tanks, military armored vehicles, artillery, shock helicopters and combat aircraft), as well as mechanisms for verifying compliance with obligations (information exchange and conducting inspections).
The draft law provides for the suspension of the action of Dovs, but does not mean the release of Belarus from it and the termination of the implementation in the Armed Forces of the internal procedures related to its implementation follows from the message.
It is noted that Belarus fully fulfills obligations under the contract, including strictly adheres to the established maximum levels of the availability of weapons, military equipment and personnel of the aircraft.
Nevertheless, in August 2022, the Czech Republic, and in March 2023, Poland decided to fail to fulfill the contract against Belarus, the report.
In November 2023, NATO NATO ONETSIA Council made a statement about the intention of the member states participating in the contract to suspend its action. The Russian Federation also came out of the DOVS. The suspension of the contract by the NATO member states and their allies actually means the cessation of its functioning.
