President of Kazakhstan called to reform UN Security Council

Kazakh President Kasym-Zhomart Tokaev announced the need for reforms to the UN, which remains “the only universal global organization.” Tokaev said this during the Astana International Forum, the Akorda press service reports.

“We are witnesses of the process of destroying the very foundation of the world order, which was built from the moment the UN was created,” Tokaev said.

According to him, humanity “will not succeed in solving the current challenges without a comprehensive reform of the Security Council.” It is necessary that the voices of representatives of the “medium powers” in the council sound more weighty and be heard, “Tokaev noted.

Tokaev said that the recent “new crises” – from Covid -19 and ending with armed conflicts – threaten a fragile international ecosystem.

“We are also witnessing the return of” block “thinking of the previous“ block ”thinking later after 30 years. The split forces are not exclusively geopolitical. They also have an economic background. Economic policy itself is openly used as a weapon. This confrontation includes sanctions and commercials wars, a focused debt policy, restriction of access or isolation from sources of financing, as well as control over investments. Together, these factors gradually undermine the foundation on which the global world and the prosperity of the last decades are based: free trade, global investments, innovations and honest competition, ” – said Tokaev.

According to the Kyrgyz leader, the result is a growing distrust, which has a negative impact on the functioning of famous international forums, existing frames, security modes, mechanisms in the field of non -proliferation.

“Thus, we are faced with uncertainty, which is growing instability and conflicts. This, in turn, encourages the increase in defense costs, the latest weapons, which, ultimately, do not guarantee anything. It is also evidenced by the fact that the fact that it is also evidenced by the fact that the fact that For the first time in half a century, we were faced with the prospect of the use of nuclear weapons. All this happens just at the moment when we need to reconcile on the threat of existential climate change, ”Tokaev said.
