President Of Tajikistan And Secretary General SCO Discussed Regional Cooperation

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon on March 14, on Thursday he held negotiations with the Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Nurlan Ermekbaev, Tajik media reported.

The central topic of the meeting was the strengthening of cooperation within the SCO, as well as regional issues, including security, economic development and water resources.

The significance of signing the border with Kyrgyzstan

During the meeting, Ermekbaev congratulated Rahmon on the signing of an agreement on the state border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

Ermekbaev emphasized that this is an important step for the entire Central Asian region.

“This step not only strengthens bilateral relations, but also becomes an example for other countries in the region,” said the General Secretary of the SCO.

In addition, the Secretary General emphasized the key role of Tajikistan in the SCO, noting that the country is putting out important initiatives at all levels, from presidential meetings to ministerial forums.

Ermekbaev paid special attention to the proposal for the creation of an anti-drug center in Dushanbe, which will coordinate the struggle against the illegal trafficking of drugs among the SHOS participating countries.

Economic agenda and ecology

Ermekbaev celebrated the contribution of Tajikistan to the development of the SCO economic development strategy adopted in 2023, which covers trade, investments, transport and industrial cooperation.

The SCO Secretary General also separately identified Tajikistan environmental initiatives to protect glaciers and water resources.

According to him, the country made a significant contribution to the global agenda, initiating the International Year of the preservation of glaciers (2025) and World Glaciers Day (March 21), recognized by the UN General Assembly.

“Protection of natural resources is one of the key elements of sustainable development, which is fully consistent with the priorities of the SCO,” Ermekbaev emphasized.

The parties also agreed to strengthen cooperation in safety, transport and industry.
