Process over “12th imam” was held closed

In the Baku court for serious crimes, the trial in the criminal case of Agil Babaev, accused of fraud on an especially large scale, continues.

As the Haqqın.az correspondent reported to the Hall of the Imam court, as well as at previous court hearings, accompanied insults and curses.

The judge said that 31 the victim sent a petition to the court on a closed mode. The reason, according to him, was a mistake in covering the process in local media. The petition was made for discussion. All victims asked to satisfy the petition and hold fully closed court hearings.

The lawyer of the accused Ali Huseynov said that the trial behind closed doors is illegal and means a violation of the freedom of the media. Babaev himself objected to such a decision.

Unlike them, the prosecutor also asked to hold court meetings closed. The judge did not satisfy the petition and said that the process would be closed only partially if necessary.

After the victim Dashgyn Aslanov testified. He stated that he did not want to testify at an open court hearing. The interrogation of the victim went behind the closed doors, representatives of the media left the courtroom.

Further, the court session continued in closed mode.

According to the indictment, Agil Babaev, calling himself the “12th Imam Mehti”, from 2007 to 2020, abusing the trust of the inhabitants of Baku, appropriated a significant amount of money. He collected money from them for allegedly charitable goals. At the “religious” meetings organized by him, Babaev said that he was sent to the earth with divine force in order to do good and help people with financial difficulties, emphasized how important it is to believe in it in order to avoid torment of the afterlife and gain paradise. Babaev knew how to convince people – they paid him monthly. He assured that the money collected is allegedly distributed to those in need and the poor, houses for families for the Schehids and Disabled War are being built on them. The damage caused to the victims is estimated at 2 million 500 thousand manat.
