Any attempts to draw the parallels between the events of 1915 in the Ottoman Empire and the Holocaust are illogical and unacceptable. This thought in an interview with Anadol was expressed by the professor of humanitarian sciences of the New York State University of the State University of New York Mark Meirovich.
The professor said that, among others, he lectures on the persecution and mass destruction of Jews during the Second World War. “For me, this topic is also personal in nature, because I, to some extent, the“ child ”of the Holocaust. My parents contained in the complex of concentration camps Auschwitz,” the professor said, noting that his grandmother is one of the many Auschwitz victims. At the same time, his mother fled to Belgium, and two aunts – to the UK and Argentina.
The scientist emphasized that the term “genocide” is especially sensitive to him. “Disgrast between the scope of this term, to some extent reduced its significance,” stated an American professor.
Returning to the topic of the events of 1915, Meirovich emphasized that historical events should study historians and recalled that Ankara took an important step in this direction, opening her archives.
The scientist noted that all the US presidents, up to Joe Biden, did not use the term “genocide” in their statements, which was the right approach. “The term“ genocide ”is a very multifaceted and subtle definition. Considering the events of 1915 in the range of wartime processes, we can say with confidence that they, by definition, have nothing to do with the Holocaust. The parallels themselves are bothering me. In the case of the Holocaust, they had a purposeful place The policy of destroying people on an ethnic basis. There was no tragedy of this kind in the Ottoman state, in my opinion, ”said Meirovich.
At the same time, the scientist attracted attention to the position of countries such as France and Argentina, trying to condemn everyone who rejects the events of 1915 as a “genocide”.
“A similar approach is unacceptable. Argentina, who opened the doors for the Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann, and France, which during the Vichy regime, was actually an accomplice of the Holocaust, has no right to give Turkey the lessons of morality. It would be better for these countries to analyze their own history themselves “, – he said.
