Religious leader of Iraq leaves politics

The leader of one of the largest political forces of Iraq and the influential Shiite imam of Muktad al-Sadr will leave politics. He stated this in his Twitter account.

“I decided not to interfere in political affairs. Now I am announcing my final care,” he wrote. Muktada al-Sadr also announced the closure of all Saadrist institutions.

Recall that in early August, supporters of Imam Muktada al-Sadra occupied the parliament of Iraq, defeated tents there and arranged a long strike. They were promoted to this that since the fall of 2021 there is no new government in Iraq, despite negotiations between parties. The As-Sadra block left the parliamentary elections in October as the largest parliamentary faction. This led to the most prolonged political vacuum in the country since 2003. Until now, an agreement has not been reached on the appointment of a new Prime Minister, President or Cabinet of Ministers.
