Statement by Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić on searches and detentions of the civil society representatives in Belarus
“Recent developments in Belarus are alarming. I am particularly concerned about the searches and detentions of well-known and respected members of civil society as well as human rights defenders, including partners of the Council of Europe.
A robust civil society is indispensable for any modern democratic state. The repression of journalists and NGOs stands in the way of Belarus’ future as a member of our European family of countries sharing common democratic values. I call on the Belarusian authorities to stop unjustified attacks and to release all those detained.”
