The head of the administration of a small Italian village of Belkastro, located in the southern region of Calabria, issued an unusual resolution, which orders to residents to “avoid any serious illnesses”.
In particular, in the Antonio Torchia resolution, it was stated that residents of Belcastro with a population of 1,200 people should “avoid diseases requiring urgent medical care,” BBC reports.
The residents of the village, located 45 kilometers from the nearest hospital, are recommended to “avoid any actions that can damage their health, including accidents, frequent walks, trips and sports activities.” Instead, the measures invited them to “rest most of the time” to minimize the risks.
“Jokeful provocation”
According to Torchia, the purpose of the decision was to draw attention to shortcomings in the healthcare system.
The head of the administration expressed the hope that the “playful provocation” would force the authorities to take more decisive actions to improve the situation with healthcare in the region.
According to Torchia, more than half of the population of Belcastro is older than 65 years old, and the duty of doctors are irregular. He also noted that the roads leading to the hospital “represent more risk than any disease.”
