The results of the first round of the election of the new leader of the conservative party are announced. All members of the conservative faction in the House of Commons, who selected eight candidates, participated in the vote.
The result of the vote was a reduction in the list of candidates to six people: in accordance with the rules, candidates who have gained less than 30 votes were excluded from it. The favorite of the campaign race was the former Minister of Finance of the country Rishi Sunak, who received 88 votes as a result of the first round. Penny Mordont (67 votes) and Liz highways (50 votes), considered the main rivals of Mr. Sunak, also received high results.
Experts discussing the course of the election company, note that the high popularity of the former Minister of Finance, however, does not guarantee his victory. Moreover, it helps to unite his opponents under the slogan “anyone but Sunak.” This is partly explained by the fact that Mr. Sunaku, of course, are unconditionally grateful for the fact that it was he who raised the uprising in the conservative party, which led to the resignation of Boris Johnson, but continue to consider this a kind of betrayal. In addition, many parliamentarians are afraid that the party, led by Mr. Sunak, who was responsible in the government of Boris Johnson for a fiscal policy in the country, may lose a significant part of its popularity among voters.
The second round of voting will be held tomorrow, July 14. The total number of rounds is now impossible to predict. On July 21, only two names should remain in voting ballots. After that, all party members will already vote. The name of the new party leader and, accordingly, the prime minister of the country will be known on September 5th.
