February 23, Russia celebrates the state holiday of the Defender of the Fatherland Day.
The holiday was established in the RSFSR on January 27, 1922.
Since 1922, this date was traditionally celebrated annually as the “Day of the Red Army”, since 1946 – “Day of the Soviet Army”, from 1949 to 1992 – “Day of the Soviet Army and Navy”.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the holiday is celebrated in Russia as “Defender of the Fatherland Day” and is the day of the military glory of Russia, and is also celebrated in a number of other countries of the post -Soviet space.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 23 congratulated veterans, personnel and civilian personnel of the Armed Forces (Sun) of the Russian Federation Happy Defender of the Fatherland Day.
According to the president, this holiday “personifies popular love and respect for the army and fleet of Russia, to people for whom the military path has become a profession and a high vocation.”
