Russia closed its Consulate General in Varna

Russia, in the early days of the war in Ukraine, which declared Bulgaria the “unfriendly country”, closed its Consulate General in Varna.

As it became known, the rental agreement used by the Consulate General of Russia in Varna and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria, the term of which expired on November 1, was not extended.

In the announcement published on the website of the Consulate General in Varna in early September, it was reported that from October 2, the building will not be carried out.

It is known that the building of the Consulate General, whose signs were also removed, was evacuated some time ago.

Russia will continue to provide consular services in the capital’s cities of Bulgaria – Sofia and Rus.

The relations of Bulgaria with Russia entered the tense phase with the outbreak of the Russian war against Ukraine. Russia declared Bulgaria a “unfriendly country” and stopped supplying natural gas.

In June 2022, Bulgaria announced 70 of 114 Russian diplomats “Persons Non Grat” and sent them together with their families. Among the Non Grata, which were announced by Persons, was the Consul General of Russia in Varna.

Russia, whose diplomats were equated with spies, announced that she would have problems with the provision of consular services due to lack of staff.

Bulgaria from the very beginning of the war sided with Ukraine and continues to help it with weapons.

In the coalition government of President Ruman Radev and Pronatovo and Proseroic Prime Minister Nikolai Daimkova, the opposition opens against Ukraine’s assistance.
