Ex-president of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili through his lawyers sent a letter to the Politico publication, which recommended the US Congress to consider the introduction of sanctions against human rights violators in Georgia.
According to Saakashvili, he returned to Georgia to save her from the anti-democratic authorities, but he was arrested on political reasons. In protest he hungry 50 days. It is reported by Interfax.
Saakashvili argues that the ruling party “Georgian Dream” took control of the judicial system and many media, with the help of which is conducting falsified elections. In his opinion, the current authorities “refuse the Western course and bring the country to Russia.”
In a letter, the Ex-Head of Georgia appeals to the Presidential Administration and the US Congress with a request to protect democracy and human rights in Georgia. “First of all, the United States should openly condemn the Georgian government for attempts to undermine democracy in the country, and Congress should consider the introduction of sanctions against human rights violators in Georgia in accordance with the Global Law of Magnitsky,” said Saakashvili.
Ex-president advises the US administration to cancel the invitation to the Government of Georgia to visit the following summit, since such an invitation sends the “wrong signal and risks legalizing anti-democratic methods.”
