Moldova President Maya Sandu January 20 in an interview with Politico allowed the country’s abandonment of neutrality for the sake of joining NATO.
“Now there is a serious discussion about our ability to protect ourselves, whether we can do it alone or we must be part of a larger alliance,” said Sandu.
She emphasized that the rejection of neutrality should occur through a democratic process.
At the same time, as noted in the article, the “egregious obstacle” for the entry of Moldova to NATO is the presence of the Russian military in the country.
According to the Constitution of Moldova, the country has a neutral status, but since 1994 he has been cooperating with NATO as part of a partnership plan.
