Scientists: British strain Covid-19 presents increased danger to children

British coronavirus strain, known as B.1.1.7, is easier to infect children and can be an increased danger to them. This statement was made by a member of the COVID-19 Advisory Council in the US Presidential Administration Michael Osterholm.

According to him, the United States may face “serious problems” in the fight against pandemic until summer.

“During the spread of previous strains of Coronavirus, we did not see children to grade 8 to be infected or seriously sick. And the children did not infect so often other community members,” he said, noting that the new strain was 50-100% more contagious and causes complications about 55% of cases.

As reported by Medportal.ru, a specialist in the field of children’s infectious diseases was made with a similar statement, Professor of Irenbul University Ayper Somer. According to her, in Turkey there is a significant increase in the cases of coronavirus among children, which is associated with the spread of the strain B.1.1.7.

Somer noted that the mutant strain strikes children under 9 years old. Moreover, cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) are increasingly registered (MIS-C) – severe disease associated with coronavirus. The symptoms of this state are very similar to the rare Cavasaki syndrome, causing inflammation in the heart, lungs and eyes. In addition, the British strain often causes serious complications in children, which before this was recorded mainly in adults. For example, myocarditis – inflammation of the heart muscle.

“Previously, we saw cases of the disease mainly in children 10, 12, 13 years old, now half of our patients under nine years. We have even a six-month-old child who seriously sick. Data from different countries show that age groups from 0 Up to 9 years now, it should be considered as a group of high risk, “said Ayper Somer.
