seals in the Mangistau region of Kazakhstan died from viral neuroinfection. This was reported by Kazinform agency with reference to the head of the Laboratory of the Scientific Center of Microbiology and Virology Aydin Kydyrmanov.
Experts conducted a molecular genetic analysis and found a new viral disease in the brain and lung tissue of animals.
“In all samples there was a virus. This is a viral neuroinfection. The detection of the virus in the brain of animals proves that this is the only cause of the disease,” Kydyrmanov said.
According to him, this viral infection develops against the background of immunodeficiency. This is still not well studied by science of the disease. It is characteristic of marine mammals, noted Kydyrmanov.
Earlier, in October-November 2024, about 2 thousand dead seals were discovered in the territory of the Tupkoparagansky and Karakiyansky districts of the Mangistau region of Kazakhstan. In addition, in the Mangistau region, mass extinction of not only seals, but also fish of sturgeon and waterfowl and waterfowls were recorded.
