The authorities of the Pridnestrovsky region controlled by the pro -Russian separatists of Moldova ask Russia to increase the number of peacekeepers.
“Peacekeepers are the main factor in the safety on the Dniester and the main obstacle to the hot heads, which are enough in Chisinau and Kiev. While the peacekeeping mission of Russia continues, Moldova has been constrained in any military plans and preparations against Transnistria,” the head said in an interview with RIA Novosti “Representatives of the Republic” in Moscow Leonid Manakov.
He recalled that back in 1995, Russia reduced the contingent to two motorized rifle battalions, although initially there were six. Now the number of Russian peacekeepers in the security zone does not exceed 450, while the state established by the documents of the United Control Commission is entitled to 3100 people.
At the same time, Manakov emphasized, to increase the Russian contingent legally possible.
According to him, it is possible to strengthen peacekeepers both at the expense of Russians permanently residing in Transnistria, and the authorities of the republic have repeatedly petitioned for this.
