Western countries should take into account that the war between the Russian Federation and Ukraine may take a long time. This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Sholts at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jensem Stoltenberg in Berlin.
“We must tune in that the war (in Ukraine) can last a long time,” said the politician.
The Chancellor recalled that last year’s NATO summit in Madrid ended with decisions to strengthen the North Atlantic Alliance. “NATO is a defense union. Germany has made a lot of efforts to increase its defense capabilities, because we are united by determination to protect every nif of the NATO countries. There is and will remain the main guarantor of collective security. Germany will firmly maintain the readiness of the German army to protect the alliance.” He noted.
Scholz emphasized the importance of joining the block of Finland and Sweden.
He added that during negotiations with NATO Secretary General, the parties, among other things, discussed the safety of critical infrastructure, primarily in the North Sea. “I would like to thank the Secretary General for committing a commitment to expanding the coordinating role of NATO. Sabotage of natural gas pipelines, as well as underwater cables or wind turbines, affects the safety of the entire North Atlantic Union, and not just individual allies,” the Chancellor explained.
