Researchers from the University of Washington (WSU) found that some bacteria dangerous for humans can “eat” human blood.
In particular, the researchers discovered the so -called “bacterial vampirism”, revealing special types of bacteria that human blood attracts.
The head of the study Siena Glenn said that three varieties of unicellular bacteria – Salmonella Enterica, Escherichia Coli, and Citrobacter Koseri, can provoke an infection of blood flow.
According to her, bacteria can enter the bloodstream through the intestines, in particular when people have intestinal bleeding. This substance in human blood can be found in just 1 minute, ”said Glenn.
The head of the study noted that, having learned how bacteria reach blood sources, it will be possible to develop appropriate drugs. Thanks to these drugs, people, especially the risk of blood flow infections, can be much healthier, ”said Glenn.
The results of the study are published in the scientific journal Elife.
