Four of 10 dog farms in South Korea closed after a law prohibiting the use of dog meat was adopted in the country in 2024. This was reported by the Korean media, referring to the Ministry of Agriculture of South Korea.
According to the agency, after the Government of the Special Project on the ban on the consumption of dog meat, 40 percent of the farms closed their activities.
It is expected that by the end of 2025 about 60 percent of the total number will be closed.
The bill prohibits breeding, slaughter, distribution and sale of dogs to meat. In addition, the government calls for subsidies to help people change their jobs.
Starting from 2027, violators of the law will threaten the maximum punishment in the form of 2 years of imprisonment or a fine of up to 30 million won ($ 20,583).
“We will help all dog farms change or close their business by 2027,” said the representative of the ministry.
A bill on the ban on drinking dogs to food
January 9, 2024, the Parliament of South Korea adopted a law prohibiting eating dog meat.
The bill provided for a ban on breeding dogs for slaughter, cutting and spreading meat.
208 members of parliament voted for the adoption of the law, 2 abstained from voting.
According to state statistics, in 2024 in South Korea there were about 1150 dog farms, 34 massacre, 219 distribution companies and about 1,600 restaurants in which they serve dishes from dog meat.
It is noted that in November, farmers stretching dogs on slaughter opposed the law on the ban on dog meat and arranged rallies near the parliament building.
