How is the impeachment process?
In South Korea, the proposal for impeachment submitted to the National Assembly to remove the head of state should be approved by two -thirds of the meeting members. For impeachment of other politicians, the absolute majority is enough.
After the impeachment voting, the decision is transferred to the Constitutional Court. The court, which organizes hearings for hearing and evaluating evidence regarding the impeachment process, has 6 months to approve or reject impeachment. If 6 out of 9 judges of the court approve of the decision, the leader is removed from office.
In this case, a new president must be elected within 60 days. This procedure is also applied if the head of state retires.
