Spain: Number Of Those Killed As Result Of Floods Increased To 158

The number of flood victims caused by strong rains and storms in Spain has reached 158 people, most of which are the inhabitants of Valencia.

According to the operational headquarters of the Autonomous Community of Valencia, in the east of the country, the most injured from the elements, the number of dead was 155 people. In another affected region, Castilia-la-Manche, 3 people became victims of floods.

The authorities express fears that the number of victims can increase, since many people are still listed as missing.

The Ministry of Defense announced the involvement of 1064 military personnel to rescue work.

more than 150 roads are closed in Valencia, and the railway message between Madrid and Valencia is suspended for at least 15 days. Also in the affected areas there are problems with power supply, water supply and food – about 100,000 people were left without electricity.

The Spanish State Meteorological Institute (Aemet) described what happened as a “worst period in a century”, noting that in 8 hours the amount of precipitation was equal to the annual norm.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited Valencia and said that the state mobilized all its resources for rescue work. He urged residents to maintain vigilance, since in some areas adverse weather conditions are still observed.
