US authorities are aware of the detention of the ex-president of the Republic of Mikhail Saakashvili in Georgia and continue to closely monitor the development of the situation, RIA Novosti said the representative of the State Department.
“We are aware of the reports of his detention and carefully follow the development of events,” said the representative of the American Dipplow at the request to comment on the detention of Saakashvili.
An American diplomat stressed that Washington calls for the Georgian authorities to provide the ex-president of the republic “fair appeal in accordance with the Georgian laws and the country’s obligations in the field of international humanitarian law.”
Answering the question about whether the US State Department intends to call the Ambassador of Georgia against the background of the decision on the detention of Saakashvili, the diplomat said: “We do not comment on private meetings.”
