Streets And Squares Named During French Colonization Renamed Niger

In the nichera of streets and squares, the names of which were given during the days of French colonization, renamed in honor of historical African personalities.

According to the decision of the Ministry of Youth and Culture, many streets and squares were renamed in the capital of the country.

The Minister of Youth and Culture Amadu Abdurakhman said that many streets, squares and boulevards are not only in Niamey, but also in other cities, names reminiscent of the population of the suffering and torment of the colonial period.

So, the boulevard, previously named after the former president of France Charles de Gaulle, was named after Jibo Bakari, who played an important role in gaining independence.

In addition, a portrait of the French commander of the Parfa-Louis Montel was removed in Niamey in a stone wall, and a portrait of the legendary leader of Burkina-Faso Thomas Sankara appeared in his place.

Francophony Square was renamed the Square of the Union of Sahel, uniting Burkina-Faso, Niger and Mali.

Recall that in June 2023, in Niger, instead of the national anthem La Nigerienne, written by French composer Maurice Albert Tirie in 1961, a new anthem for the honor of the Motherland (Pour L’Honneur de La Patrie) was taken, reflecting the struggle against the wrestling against Colonialism.
