Supreme Court of Turkey upheld sentence of 12 convicts in case of Karlov

The Third Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court of Turkey upheld the sentence in relation to the twelve of 13 people sentenced in the case of the attempt to the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Ankara Andrei Karlov.

At the same time, the verdict against one of the defendants (3 years 9 months of imprisonment) was canceled for the lack of corpus delicti. The chamber completed the consideration of appeals about the decisions of the second court on particularly serious crimes of the city of Ankara of March 9, 2021.

The sentences to the defendants Shakhin Sogyut, Salikha Yylmaz and Akhmet Kylyncharlan are upheld. All three were sentenced to two lifelong terms in a maximum security colony under the articles: “Trying to overthrow the constitutional system” and “Western murder.”

The verdict against Vekhby Kurshad Akalyn and Hussein Kotuja, who are recognized by Fetö terrorists, was also upheld. They were sentenced to a lifelong time in a maximum security colony under the article “an attempt to overthrow the constitutional system”, as well as to 15 years in prison for “aiding in organizing an assassination attempt”.

The Chamber recognized the verdict in relation to the defendants Hayreddin Aydinbash and Ramazan Yudzhel, sentenced to 10 years and 6 months of imprisonment for “participating in an armed terrorist organization”, as well as Hassan Tunchi, Sergan Bashar and Ufuk Gul, sentenced to seven from Half years of imprisonment each. Aisha’s sentences are also upheld by Kaan Bulbul, sentenced to 9 years in prison.

At the same time, the verdict against Mustafa Timur Okkan, the organizer of the exhibition, at which the Ambassador of Karlov, was killed, was canceled. Ozkan was held under the article “Aiding an armed terrorist organization” and was sentenced to 3 years and 9 months in prison.

In relation to the defendant, no acquittal was sentenced. The chamber found that the previously made decision was erroneous, since the case was not presented with “convincing evidence” of involvement in Fetö.

At the same time, the chamber came to the conclusion that the goals of the organizers of the attempt on the ambassador of the Russian Federation corresponded to the plans of the participants in the attempt of the coup on July 15, 2016. In particular, participants in the assassination plan for the Russian diplomat were closely in contact with Gulen terrorists.
