The Syrian Human Rights Network (SNHR) called for the abolition of economic sanctions against Syria.
SNHR shared with the correspondent of the Anadolu agency (AA) a written statement about the new situation in Syria after the fall of the Basist regime on December 8 and international sanctions against the country.
“Syria sanctions were introduced as a result of the inability of the United Nations Security Council (UN) to stop serious violations committed by the Assad regime against the Syrian people since March 2011, the statement said.
The United States, the European Union and many other countries introduced economic and political sanctions to compensate for this failure, call the regime to answer and put pressure on it to agree to a political decision. “
With the fall of the regime, the picture in Syria has changed significantly, these sanctions have lost their justification as a means of containment, punishment and political changes.
The statement notes that the continuation of sanctions is a serious obstacle to the return of refugees and displaced persons and interferes with the efforts of the UN and non -governmental organizations.
According to the document, decisions on international sanctions against Syria were made in connection with crimes committed by the regime, and that this situation disappeared after the overthrow of the regime.
SNHR believes that these sanctions will interfere with the recovery process and worsen the humanitarian situation in the absence of Assad, and calls to leave sanctions on only officials of the collapsed regime.
The statement calls for the termination of economic sanctions against Syrian institutions.
– appeal to the new Syrian government
SNHR turned to the new Syrian government with an appeal to observe human rights standards and carry out reforms aimed at strengthening justice and equality in society.
The network also called on the UN and international organizations to act in the abolition of sanctions, observe the reform and maintain the process of restoration and political transformations.
