Turkey: at end of 2023, 48,733 libraries operate

In Turkey, at the end of 2023, 48,733 libraries operate. Such data brought at the Institute of Statistics of Turkey (Tüi̇k).

In particular, as of the end of 2023 in Turkey, in addition to the National Library and the People’s Library under the Administration of the President of Turkey, 1295 public libraries, 627 university libraries and 46,809 libraries of formal and informal format.

The number of books in Turkish libraries increased by 32.6 percent compared to a year earlier. The number of books in the People’s Library under the Administration of the President of Turkey amounted to 2 million 532 thousand 299 books.

In the National Library, this figure increased by 3.5 percent – to 1 million 689 thousand 166, in university libraries – by 2.7 percent – up to 21 million 666 thousand 947, in public libraries – by 4.8 percent – up to 22 million 204 thousand 501, in the libraries of the institution of educational institutions of a formal and informal format – by 56.9 percent – up to 68 million 970 thousand 463.

The number of persons who used the services of public libraries last year increased by 25.3 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 33 million 561 thousand 919 people.

Over the same period, the number of subscribers in public libraries increased by 11.2 percent – to 6 million 193 thousand 356.

– In Turkey, 627 university libraries

As of the end of 2023, 627 university libraries are functioning in Turkey, 477 of which state, 150 – libraries in funds.

The number of electronic books in university libraries last year increased by 23.4 percent compared to the previous year – up to 118 million 373 thousand 442.

The number of subscribers in university libraries increased by 5.3 percent – up to 4 million 199 thousand 285, and the number of non -infinition materials – by 8.8 percent – up to 1 million 662 thousand 552.

Last year, 71 thousand 200 books were published in the country. The number of published materials last year reached 99 thousand 25, which is 18.4 percent more than in 2022.

At the same time, 29.9 percent of materials published last year – academic, 19.9 percent – educational nature and 17.6 percent – fiction for adults.
