Turkey will return to exploration of gas fields in Mediterranean Sea

Turkey will resume intelligence of natural gas deposits in the Eastern Mediterranean. Currently, the priority for her is gas production in the Black Sea, said the head of the Ministry of Energy of Turkey Fatih Donmes, reports Milliyet.

“We do not ignore the Mediterranean Sea, we will look there again, but at present the Black Sea is a priority for us,” he said.

He noted that the priority of gas production from the Black Sea deposits is caused by the desire of its country to reduce external dependence in natural gas: “At present, we are 99% dependent in natural gas.”

According to Donmes, gas can be obtained in the exclusive economic zone of Turkey in the Mediterranean Sea, its supplies are possible together with other countries to Europe. “It can be Israel and Egypt. If it is economically beneficial, why not supply gas through the territory of Turkey?” – added minister.

He also did not rule out the supply of gas from Iraq. “Tomorrow, Iraq may be conducted, if there is reconnaissance. New sources from the Caspian basin are possible,” Demes said, adding that the search for new energy sources is due to shocks in energy markets. “The world is rapidly moving in the direction of the new energy crisis. Due to the sanctions against a number of countries, it is very difficult to stop the increase in oil and gas prices. Europe is aware of this, therefore it is required to search for new sources, their diversification, the variety of routes. We see that there is an object for conversation and achieve possible agreements, ”the minister said.
