Türkiye Became Party To UN Agreement To Protect Biological Diversity In Open Sea

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan signed the UN agreement on the preservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in the areas outside the action of national jurisdiction.

The Foreign Minister of Turkey continues contacts on the fields of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

According to diplomatic sources, the process associated with the accession to an agreement providing for the preservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in the regions of the open sea outside the jurisdiction of states, including domestic waters, territorial waters, continental shelf, exclusive economic zone (IEZ ), began with the signing by the Turkish Minister of the document.

in the framework of the principle of “Freedom of the Open Sea”, which is one of the cornerstone principles of international marine law, the regions of the Open Sea can be used by all states, since these sea territories do not belong specifically to any state.

The UN agreement is aimed at protecting and sustainable use of biological diversity in these naval areas located outside of national jurisdiction.

Türkiye attaches great importance to international sea law and will continue to contribute to maintaining international efforts on environmental issues that excite future generations.
