Türkiye will support the candidacy of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte for the post of new Secretary General of NATO. This was reported by Turkish officials.
According to information, Ankara notified her decision of other members of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Earlier last week, Rutta held a meeting in Istanbul with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in order to enlist the support of the Turkish side on the election of the new head of the bloc.
Negotiations in tete-a-tet format took place on April 26 in the Vakhdettin residence.
At a joint press conference, following the results of the meeting, Rutta said that “the Southern Flank of NATO needs Turkey and its leadership.”
“Turkey plays a key role. It makes efforts to resolve the situation in Gaza, as well as the end of the terrible war to Ukraine. In this regard, you play an important role,” said the head of the Government of the Netherlands.
