“After the completion of hostilities, Ukraine will be ready to release and repatriate Russian prisoners of war, but reserves the right to keep in custody of war criminals.” This is stated in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
It is noted that the Ukrainian side is ready, as provided for by international treaties, after the complete completion of military operations to release and repatriate Russian prisoners of war in case of their desire.
“At the same time, Ukraine reserves the right to maintain in custody and bring to criminal liability of military personnel of the Russian armed forces and other military units acting on our territory for the war crimes and crimes against humanity they committed,” the Foreign Ministry noted in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs .
The department also emphasizes that Ukraine adheres to a humane attitude to prisoners of war and provides everything guaranteed by international law in full.
Ukraine constantly provides representatives of international organizations, in particular, the International Committee of the Red Cross, access to Russian prisoners of war. In addition, the National Information Bureau has been created in Ukraine, which is engaged in issues of prisoners, in particular their exchange. On the other hand, Ukraine requires a mirror humane attitude to Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russians, including the involvement of specialized international institutions to monitor the conditions of their maintenance in the territories controlled by Russia.
