UN: About 40% Of Population Of Ukraine Needs Humanitarian Assistance

About 40 percent of the population of Ukraine need humanitarian assistance. This was announced at a briefing in the Geneva Office of the UN by the UN humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine Matias Shmale.

He recalled that the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine began in February 2022. “Since then, more than 12 thousand people have died. About 40 percent of the inhabitants of Ukraine need humanitarian assistance,” said Shmale.

He noted that the UN seeks to provide assistance and protection of 8.5 million people as part of a humanitarian response plan in Ukraine this year.

According to Shmala, since February 2022, more than 2 thousand attacks on medical institutions occurred.

“Systematic attacks on the energy infrastructure can represent an additional risk to already vulnerable people, especially in the winter, if the power outages of electricity will extend for more than a few days at submarine temperatures,” he said.

Shmale noted that the UN, non -governmental and volunteer organizations covered at least 7.2 million people thanks to the help of $ 1.8 billion provided for the humanitarian needs of Ukraine.

According to him, the regions where fighting is being carried out pose a serious threat to the security of the civilian population and employees of humanitarian organizations.

“In 2024, 9 employees of humanitarian organizations died in the performance of official duties, and humanitarian objects were damaged,” Schmale added.
