The UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution condemning a violation of women’s rights in Afghanistan and calling for the ruling movement “Taliban” to put an end to restrictive practices, reports Reuters.
After the Taliban movement arrived in power in 2021, the situation with female rights in the country became catastrophic. They faced restrictions on their clothes, movement and education, despite the earlier promises of the Taliban about the opposite.
“Since August 2021, the situation with human rights in Afghanistan has seriously worsened, especially with respect to women and girls,” said the Czech Republic of Czech Republic on behalf of the European Union, which introduced the resolution. “The restrictive measures introduced by the Taliban are made invisible in Afghan society,” he said.
The resolution was also supported by the representative of Afghanistan in the UN Council for Human Rights Mohibulla Tayb, appointed by the previous Afghan government. He called the actions of the Taliban “gender apartheid.”
The adopted resolution does not have mandatory legal force, but has a political weight and can lead to official investigations of cases of violation of women’s rights in Afghanistan, which, in turn, can force the Taliban movement to change its position.
