UN: Children Make Up 38% Of Human Trafficking Victims Around World

The vulnerability of children in front of people traders is enhanced around the world. This was stated by a special representative of the UN Secretary General for violence against children, Maalla Mjid is naughty, speaking at the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council, the UN press service reports.

According to her, the trade in children is closely connected with other types of violence: children are often subjected to cruel treatment and operation both before and during and after they become victims of human trafficking.

“Poverty, food deficiency, humanitarian crises, conflicts, forced movement – along with social and gender inequality – contribute to the growth of this type of crime,” said Najat Maalla Mjid.

Children’s trading has a destructive and long -term effect, creating a closed cycle of violence and social insulation, which is transmitted from generation to generation, she said.

According to the last global report on human trafficking, children make up 38 percent of all victims of human trafficking in the world, and among girls this indicator has increased significantly over the past five years.

human trafficking networks are developing rapidly and become more and more organized, the special representative continued.

Modern digital technologies also contribute to the commission of these crimes. On a global scale, the demand for the sexual operation of children through the Internet is growing, home slavery, children’s marriages, recruitment in armed groups, coercion to begging and criminal activity are widely practiced.

According to Najet, Maalla Mjid, the number of convictions for the trade in children remains low, and the perpetrators often avoid punishment. Corruption, stigmatization, fear and lack of protective mechanisms limit the ability of children to report violations and achieve justice.

As a result, the trade in children remains a cheap, little -risk, but highly profitable crime bringing billions of dollars annually.

“The cessation of children’s trading is an emergency task and it is possible if we invest more funds in social systems and protection systems for children and if we strengthen the accountability by putting the end of the impunity of criminals,” concluded a special representative.
