UN: crisis in Syria has reached “epic proportions”

After earthquakes and more than twelve years of the war, the humanitarian crisis of epic proportions is observed in Syria.

This was announced at a meeting of the UN Security Council by the special settlement of the Secretary General of Syria Gayr Pedersen and the representative of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OLRS) Lisa Dawen, the press service of the organization.

.

Syrians still need huge resources for emergency humanitarian needs and restoration projects. At the same time, as always an important issue remains providing humanitarian access to those in need of assistance, both cross -border and access within the country through the front lines.

DOUTENTA emphasized that the current scale of humanitarian needs in Syria is “unprecedented” even for the Syrian crisis. The consequences of a twelve -year -old armed conflict, coupled with macroeconomic pressure and destruction as a result of recent earthquakes, led to the fact that many Syrians would not survive without help from the outside.

“, even before the earthquake of humanitarian aid and protection, 15.3 million people needed – more than half of the entire population,” the representative of the UN VSL.

emphasized.

She expressed fear that this number would only grow. Today, about 6.9 million people are internally moved people throughout Syria. Many have been in this position for more than five years.

Pederesen also noted that any advancement of the political process in Syria will require a compromise “from a wide range of various players.”

After the tragic consequences of recent earthquakes in Syria in the world, attention to this country again increased, the diplomatic efforts of the participants in the negotiations of the Astana format were intensified. There are new opportunities for interaction between Arab countries and the Syrian government. However, as Pedersen said, at this stage you need support for “all key players.”

“No existing groups of players – neither Syrian parties, nor Astana players, nor Western players, no Arab players – can alone achieve a political solution. If we want to achieve progress on any issue – even in stages, step by step “We must work together. In the end, everyone needs to contribute to coordinated multilateral efforts,” said the UN specialist.
