Since May 29, 1948, when the UN first peacekeeping mission was established in the Middle East, more than 4,200 peacekeepers were killed under the UN flag, 103 of them in 2022, the organization’s press service reports.
“They support the safety, stability and supremacy of the law. They are the hope and protection of the civilian population who ended up in the epicenter of conflicts. The UN peacekeepers risk their life, saving others. They are a symbol of multilaterality,” said the UN Secretary General Antoniu Guterierrish in Throughout the International Peacemaker Day, which is celebrated on May 29.
“Every year, the International Day of the United Nations provides us with the opportunity to honor the memory of women and men who are fighting for the world on the forefront in the most dangerous areas of the world,” said the UN head.
At the ceremony dedicated to the dead peacekeepers, Guterrysh laid the wreath in memory of those who gave their lives in the service under the UN flag. The head of the organization posthumously awarded the peacekeepers who died in 2022, the medal of Daga Hammarscheld.
This year, the UN peacekeeping operations marks 75 years. Today, in 12 UN missions, more than 87 thousand “blue helmets” from 125 countries of the world are served.

“The fallen military, police and civilian employees arrived [in the UN Mission] from 39 different countries with different experience. But they all embodied our duty to the world.
