UN is concerned about tension in Tajikistan

The UN Secretary General Antoniu Guterres is concerned about the growth of tension and violence in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) of Tajikistan, including messages about the deaths of people. This was stated by the official representative of the Secretary General Stefan Duzharrik, the Ferghana agency reports.

“The General Secretary is concerned about the increasing tension and violence in the mountain -Badakhshan autonomous region, including data on the dead. He calls for restraint and effort to solve the current situation by peaceful means. The UN continues to carefully monitor the situation,” Dyuzharrik said .

Previously, concern in GBAO expressed a diplomatic mission of the European Union, the Embassy of France, Germany, Great Britain and the USA in Tajikistan. In a joint statement, they called on all aspects “not to regret the efforts for de -escalation, to show restraint and refrain from excessive use and incitement to violence.” Imam Ismailites of the world, Prince Karim Aga Han IV, in turn, urged his followers in Badakhshan to “solve conflicts through dialogue and in the spirit of respect and mutual understanding,” recalls the agency.

The situation in the region worsened in mid -May after the inhabitants of Khorog, the administrative center of the GBAO – put forward a number of requirements to the authorities, including the resignation of the head of the region. Otherwise, the Badamshans promised to start protest rallies. The authorities recognized the requirements illegal and said that participation in protests will be considered as an act of terrorism. On May 16, protesters headed for the regional administration in the center of Khorog, security officials blocked the path. They used rubber bullets and tear gas against participants in the action. On May 18, an anti -terrorist operation began. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan, during the operation, an officer of one of the power structures died, 13 military personnel were seriously injured. 8 were also killed, 11 were injured and 114 “members of terrorist groups” were detained.
